Context

International Maritime Industries (IMI), the world’s largest modern shipyard, spanning 12 square kilometers with a workforce of over 40,000 direct employees, has entrusted SATEC Arabia to manage and operate its IT and cybersecurity services.

IMI’s primary shareholder is SOFON, a joint venture between Aramco, the Saudi sovereign fund, and Hyundai.

Located in the MENA region and with Saudi Aramco as its main partner, IMI is undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at optimizing operations and ensuring the security of its IT and operational technology (OT) infrastructure. This project marks a significant milestone in SATEC’s strategy to expand in international markets and strengthen its presence in Saudi Arabia.

Imi

Challenge

The project undertaken by SATEC Arabia faced several key challenges:

Managing large-scale infrastructure

With an area of 12 km² and operations involving over 80,000 people, the shipyard required a robust and scalable solution to ensure the continuous operability of its IT and cybersecurity systems.

Technological and operational transition

IMI needed to migrate its current operations to a target state that included the modernization of tools and technologies, as well as the stabilization of operations in a highly complex environment.

Local talent development

A critical objective of the project was the progressive incorporation of local expert profiles, with a focus on creating over 60 new jobs, of which at least 50% should be occupied by Saudi professionals.

Solution

SATEC Arabia implemented a comprehensive and multifaceted solution to meet IMI’s needs, addressing several critical areas of the shipyard’s technological operations:

SATEC Arabia took full responsibility for IMI’s networking, servers, and systems infrastructure, covering both on-premises and cloud environments. This included support for traditional data networks as well as complete management of corporate telephony. Additionally, application support was provided, ensuring comprehensive IT coverage for IMI.

The project was structured in three phases. The first phase included transition and diagnostics, where current operations were evaluated, and a Target Operating Model (TOM) was defined. The second phase focused on migration and operational stabilization, adjusting tools and technologies to IMI’s needs.

Finally, the third phase involves standard operation with the implementation of all necessary tools and technologies for optimal service functioning, establishing KPIs and SLAs to ensure quality and continuous improvement.

Results

The implementation of the project at IMI has delivered tangible benefits:

1

Enhanced visibility

The solution provided multiple key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess service quality and availability, improving response capability to incidents.

2

Reduced incident resolution time

Thanks to real-time root cause analysis and monitoring, incident resolution times have significantly decreased, enhancing operational efficiency.

3

Data centralization

The platform allowed the centralization of critical data, simplifying management and improving decision-making.

4

Local talent development

The project acted as a catalyst for job creation in the region, with over 60 new positions, strengthening SATEC Arabia’s commitment to developing local talent and creating opportunities for Saudi professionals.
